Ruth H. Johnson was born December 18, 1918 in Scottsville near Marshall, Texas. She transitioned into eternity eight days before her 100th Birthday on December 10, 2018.
She was educated in the public school system of Caddo Parish at Central School in Shreveport. She was a diehard Southern University Jaguar. She attended the seventy-fifth homecoming of her alma mater and was honored as one of the oldest alumni. She was a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the DeSoto Retired Teachers Association, and Friends of the DeSoto Parish Library.
She married the late Charlie Langston Johnson in the early 1940’s. She was one who never let the right hand know what the left hand was doing. It gave her pleasure and joy to remember others with cards, gifts, and other tokens of her affection. She seemed to have spoiled everyone with her lavish outpouring of love.
She was a committed member of Wesley United Methodist Church for many years. She was very active in the United Methodist Women, The Sunday School. Vacation Bible School, Family Night, and served as chairperson of the Hospitality Committee.
She joins a great cloud of witnesses including her husband, parents, her siblings Willis George Wilson, Sr. and Irvin Percy Tyler, her maternal great grandmother fondly called Mother Gracie and her maternal grandmother Alice Ferguson.
Left to cherish her memory are her nieces, Alyce Tyler, Bridgette Tyler, and Chrystal Tyler-Wishum (Long Beach, CA), cousin Patricia Kessee, her devoted sister-in-law, Miss Emma Gertrude Johnson ( Mansfield), God children Dianne Williams Pratt (Flower Mound), Percy McFarland(Humble, TX, and grand God child, Damien Heard (Baton Rouge, LA.), her church family, friends, and countless former students.
The family received friends on Friday evening at the Wesley United Methodist Church.
Leading the Service of Celebration of her Life on Saturday Dec. 15 were Pastor Anna Morris-Jackson and Former Pastor Jerald Danzell. Honoring her as pallbearers were: Bandon Woodley, Stanley Woodley, Jr., Bobby Holmes, Henry Henderson, Ernel Jones, and Grayson Collins. A repast was served at Wesley’s Fellowship by the Hospitality Committee, chaired by Captain Annette Blue and the United Methodist Women, Mrs. Ethel Lilly, President. The service was entrusted to the Jenkins Funeral Home.
