BROTHER BILLY BURKETT
12/05/29 – 11/01/20

Brother Billy Burkett went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, November 1, 2020. Born in Converse, Louisiana, to John and Gladys Burkett on December 5, 1929, Brother Billy preached his first sermon when he was 16 years old. He surrendered to the ministry at the age of 17 and served as a Baptist preacher for 72 years, with all but two years of his service in churches in Northwest Louisiana. Brother Billy served as a Missions Pastor in Alamosa, Colorado during 1962-64.

He devoted his entire adult life to serving God and his family. He met his wife of 62 years, Mary Louise Pentecost, while preaching at Fellowship Baptist church in Sabine Parish in 1948. His most recent pastorate was at Bethany Baptist Church near Robeline, where he served up until 2019. He was instrumental in the establishment of Clara Springs Baptist Camp and worked tirelessly on other projects for the Louisiana Baptist Convention, District 8, over the past 50 years.

Brother Billy was a cattleman and avid horseman. Nicknamed the “Cowboy Preacher” in his twenties, he rodeo’d and was often the pickup man for bronc and bull riders. He was a loving husband and father of three children. He enjoyed watching his grandsons grow and marry, and his eleven great-grandchildren in more recent years. He was a stage-4 cancer survivor but lost his wife, Mary, in 2012. He is also preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Johnnie Mae. On April 22, 2015, Brother Billy married Martha Jane Powell, with whom he lovingly shared the last five years of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Jane; his sister, Elaine Burkett; and his three children, Dr. Mike Burkett and his wife Sue, Don Burkett and his wife Virginia, and Lisa Graham and her husband Randy; Martha’s children, Robert Burleson and Jo Lynn Graham. Grandchildren include Stephen Van Sickle, Garrett Burkett, Jeremy Graham, Cody Graham and Caleb Burkett.

Brother Billy’s five grandsons served as pallbearers at his funeral, along with Martha’s son, Robert. Honorary pallbearers included Jake Brice, Rowdy Burleson, John Graham, Billy Wells and the deacons of Springhill Baptist Church.

An outdoor Celebration of Life was held at Fellowship Baptist Church east of Converse on Tuesday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation was held from noon until 2:00 p.m. that same day outside. The service was conducted by Reverends Lee Dickson, Randy Graham and Lynn Burkett. Burial was next to the church in Oak Grove Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Jack Corley for his many years of outstanding care and Dr. Mark Holder for his care in Brother Billy’s last days. They express their deep appreciation for the staff of Kindred at Home healthcare and Superior Hospice.

HERMAN GLEN BATES
12/07/45 - 11/16/20

Funeral services for Herman Glen Bates of Logansport were held at 11:00 on Thursday, November 19, 2020 with Bro. Charles Hall officiating.

Herman was born on December 7, 1945 in Shreveport, Louisiana to D.E “Tot” Bates and Blanch White Bates and passed away on November 16, 2020 in Shreveport at the age of 74. He grew up in the Haslam, Texas community and graduated from Joaquin High School in 1964.

Growing up in Haslam, Texas, Herman developed many lifelong friendships and loved to recount the many memories of them hunting, fishing, swimming, camping, and simply growing up together. He was very quick to correct anyone who would say that he grew up in Joaquin by simply saying “I grew up in Haslam, get your geography straight”. He was known for his humor, loyalty, hard work ethic, and above all, his intellect. In fact, Herman would take it upon himself to assist his friends in their schoolwork and college planning, something he was not able to pursue himself due to his commitment to taking care of his family after the death of his father in 1965.

Upon completion of high school, Herman began his lifelong career as a Pipeliner, having retired in 2012. Over the course of 48 years, he worked on projects across the United States including the Trans-Alaska pipeline in the 1970s. In 1969 he was given the CB handle “Tail Chain” which he was known by amongst his close pipeline buddies. He loved to travel, whether it be for work or leisure, and especially loved the Oregon Coast (Coos Bay) and his beloved Alaska. Herman was well respected for his experience and expertise in all areas of the pipeline industry, specifically engineering and directional drilling. Prior to his retirement, he was a chief inspector for Universal Ensco of Houston Texas.

In 1967, Herman received his Draft Notice for the war in Vietnam while working in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and proudly served his country from 1967 through 1969 having spent 1 year in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam as a member of 9th Infantry Division, 9th Military Intelligence Detachment. Herman was well respected buy his peers and superiors equally and advanced to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6) in only two years. He was awarded many medals and awards for his service in Vietnam including a Bronze Star with 2 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Herman was especially pleased when his son, Preston, made the decision to follow his father’s footsteps and join the U.S. Army himself. A special moment was when he was honored to place his son’s blue infantry cord on his uniform at his military graduation in 1997 in Fort Benning, Georgia. Herman was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW, and DAV.

Herman had a lifelong love for the outdoors, namely hunting and fishing. He loved to tell stories of hunting in the “Dolet Hills” community in Louisiana and “Ashton Hill” area in Shelby County, Texas, along with his many fishing trips along the Sabine River as well as his many “secret spots” including Horseshoe Lake, Yellow Dog, Tenaha Creek, McFadden Creek, and Socagee Creek to name a few.

Preceding Herman in death were his parents D.E. “Tot” Bates and Blanch Bates; His brother Robert “Bob” Bates; his sisters Mae Ella Beckham and Alice Fern Prudhomme; and his great-nephew, David Bates. Herman is survived by his wife of 36 years, Alice Bates of Mansfield, LA; his son, Preston Glen Bates and husband Jay of Shreveport, LA, along with his “grandson” Smith, a blue Staffordshire Terrier; his nieces, Jana Gillispie and husband Quint of Shreveport, LA, Tanya Brooks of Orlando, FL; Janice Foust of Conroe, TX, Alice Cupp of Houston, TX, and Rita Dickerson of Joaquin, TX; his nephews, Webb Bates and wife Norma Gene of Joaquin, TX and Milton Bates and wife Kay of Joaquin, TX; his special lifelong friends, Evon and Johnny Mack Daw of Nacogdoches, TX; and his long-time caregiver and friend, Jackie hunter of Stanley, LA.

The family would like to send a sincere thank you to the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center and Jackie Hunter for their excellent care over the years as well as his many friends and loved ones that always brought a kind word and smile to his face.

For anyone wishing to make a tribute in Herman’s memory, the family suggests donations be made to the Veteran’s charity of your choice.

Herman will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of a traditional burial, his ashes will visit the places across the United States that held special memories for him.

Mom loved Grand Cane and participated in and supported the activities and efforts to improve and preserve the history of the town and school.

After moving to Woodsprings, Mom met Herman Gamble and in 1940 they married and shared 57 years before his death in 1997. Mom and Dad worked to build a cattle farm and raise a family on the land purchased during their marriage. Their three children, a grandson, and his family all live on and operate the family farm. PAULINE M. GAMBLE
11/26/47 - 12/23/20

Pauline Marie Gamble, 73, of Grand Cane, Louisiana, passed away Wednesday, 23 December, 2020.

Pauline was born 26 November, 1947, to Bronson Hobby and Raye Morton Gamble. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 9 with visitation held 10:00 a.m. at Roseneath Funeral Home in Mansfield, with the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Beulah Cemetery following the service.

The oldest of three children, “Big P” grew up in Mansfield, Louisiana, and attended school there, graduating from Mansfield High School as part of the Class of ‘65. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Northeast Louisiana University (now University of Louisiana at Monroe) and her master’s degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport.

When she finished college, Pauline taught school in Houma, Louisiana, until accepting a position as a mathematician with Texaco in New Orleans, Louisiana. At the time, there were no women engineers in the oil and gas business and Pauline became one of the first women to work in that capacity. Pauline was at her happiest in South Louisiana Mardi Gras, LSU foot-ball, the food, the music - she always felt that the larger-than-life spirit of that region fit her larger-than-life personality.

After retirement from Texaco, Pauline taught school in Louisiana and Texas and worked in institutional laundry management in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. If ever a place brought her as much joy as her beloved New Orleans, it was the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. She eventually returned to Louisiana, making her home in Grand Cane. Not one to sit idle, Pauline took a position teaching math at Central School, where she worked until her passing.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James Bronson Gamble. Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Donna Gamble Basco (Teddy Ray); the loves of her life, her nephew and niece, Andy Crocker and Katie Crocker Price (Jason); her great niece and nephews, who affectionally called her “Yine Yine,” Alexis Austin, David “Fish” Price, and Jase Price; and a host of family and friends - Pauline never met a stranger and kept relationships with people ongoing, telling them “I’ll talk to you later” instead of goodbye.

The family invites “Miss Gamble’s” current and former students, whom she loved dearly, to serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home; PO Box 4196; Monroe, LA 71211 or Central School Corporation; PO Box 187; Grand Cane, LA 71032, or the organization of your personal choice.
